Position:  CNC EDM Programmer and Operator

Location: Nolato Vermont – Royalton Tooling Division, South Royalton, VT

Position Type: Full-time

Overview

The CNC EDM Programmer and Operator is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) equipment to manufacture high- precision tooling and components. This role works closely with engineering, tooling, and production teams to ensure parts are produced safely, accurately, and on schedule, in support of Nolato’s quality and delivery goals.

Key Responsibilities

·       Programming and Setup

o   Create, modify, and optimize CNC EDM programs (wire and/or sinker) based on CAD models, prints, and process requirements.

o   Import and interpret 3D models and 2D drawings to define machining strategy, tool paths, and fixturing.

o   Select appropriate electrodes, tooling, and setups to achieve dimensional and surface finish requirements.

o   Set up machines, fixtures, workpieces, and electrodes; establish work and tool offsets.

o   Perform program prove-outs on new or revised jobs, making necessary adjustments for efficiency and quality.

·       Operation and Production

o   Operate CNC EDM equipment to produce parts to print, within specified tolerances and timelines.

o   Monitor machine performance, tool wear, and process stability; make adjustments as needed.

o   Perform in-process inspection using precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, indicators, CMM or optical equipment as applicable).

o   Document machining steps, setup sheets, and process parameters for repeatability.

o   Coordinate with toolmakers, machinists, and engineers to resolve issues and improve manufacturability.

·       Quality and Continuous Improvement

o   Ensure parts meet print, functional, and cosmetic requirements; identify and correct nonconformances.

o   Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and 5S around EDM equipment and work areas.

o   Suggest and implement improvements to programs, setups, and tooling to reduce cycle times and improve quality.

o   Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions related to tooling and EDM processes.

·       Maintenance and Safety

o   Perform routine maintenance on EDM machines (e.g., filters, dielectric fluid checks, basic troubleshooting).

o   Report equipment issues promptly and support maintenance and vendors as needed.

o   Follow all Nolato safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe handling of materials and equipment.

o   Comply with company policies, work instructions, and quality system requirements.

Qualifications

·       Education and Experience

o   High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/vocational training in machining or related field preferred.

o   3+ years of CNC EDM programming and operating experience (wire, sinker, or both), preferably in a tooling or precision manufacturing environment.

o   Experience reading and interpreting complex blueprints, GD&T, and CAD models.

·       Technical Skills

o   Proficiency with CNC EDM machines and control systems (e.g., wire/sinker EDM controls and related CAM software).

o   Strong understanding of EDM machining principles, electrode selection, and process variables.

o   Solid knowledge of precision measurement and inspection techniques.

o   Ability to work from engineering drawings, CAD/CAM data, and written/verbal instructions.

o   Competence with basic computer skills for programming, documentation, and data entry.

·       Competencies

o   Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

o   Good problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.

o   Ability to manage multiple jobs and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

o   Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.

o   Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

·       Physical and Work Environment Requirements

o   Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift components and tooling (up to 50lbs) for extended periods.

o   Work is performed in a manufacturing/tooling environment with exposure to machinery, noise, and shop materials.

Compensation: $30 - $35/hour depending on experience.
